Travel From Barcelona to Tangier: Flights, Ferries and Overland Routes

Barcelona and Tangier are two of the most fascinating port cities of the Mediterranean world. One is famous for Gaudí, beaches and tapas; the other for its white medina, its legendary cafés and its location at the meeting point of Africa and Europe. The distance between these two lively Mediterranean ports is less than 1,000 kilometers, and you can choose between a short flight, a long and relaxing ferry cruise, or an overland journey through Spain.

Barcelona and Tangier have always looked toward the sea. For centuries, sailors, merchants and travelers have moved between the ports of the western Mediterranean. Today, Catalonia is home to one of the largest Moroccan communities in Spain, and you will hear Darija in many neighborhoods of Barcelona. That is why flights and ferries between the two cities are so frequent, especially in summer.

Tangier has a unique history of its own. From the 1920s to 1956, it was an international zone governed by several foreign powers, a place of spies, writers, artists and adventurers. The painter Henri Matisse came to paint its light, and many famous writers lived and worked in its cafés and villas. Arriving from cosmopolitan Barcelona, you will feel that Tangier, too, is a city where cultures meet.

Flying is the fastest way. Direct flights connect Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) with Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) in about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. The route is very popular with tourists, students and Moroccan families living in Catalonia, with dozens of weekly flights operated mainly by Air Arabia Maroc, Vueling and Ryanair, and sometimes other airlines depending on the season.

Tips for Flying From Barcelona

  • Book early for summer and holidays, when many Moroccans living in Catalonia travel home.
  • Compare airlines: prices on this route can change a lot from one day to another.
  • Check baggage allowances on low-cost airlines, especially if you plan to buy souvenirs.
  • Arrive early at El Prat: flights to Morocco leave the Schengen area and pass through passport control.
  • Choose your terminal carefully: airlines use different terminals at El Prat.

From Tangier Airport to the City

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is about 15 kilometers from the city center, around 20 to 30 minutes by car. Grand taxis wait outside the terminal; always agree on the price with the driver before you leave the airport. There is also an airport bus to the city, which is cheap but less convenient with heavy luggage. If you are staying in the medina, ask your riad for a transfer, because cars cannot enter the narrow streets and it helps to have someone guide you to the door.

If you are not in a hurry, or if you travel with your own car, motorbike or campervan, there is a direct ferry from the port of Barcelona to Tanger Med. It is a long mini-cruise across the western Mediterranean, past the Balearic Islands and along the Spanish coast, before entering the Strait of Gibraltar.

Is the Barcelona Ferry a Good Idea?

For foot passengers, the ferry is slower and not always cheaper than flying. But it is excellent if you travel with a car, motorbike, bicycle or lots of luggage, or if you enjoy slow travel. Booking a cabin turns the crossing into a relaxing night at sea, and you arrive in Morocco rested and ready to drive or continue your trip. In summer, the ferries are full of families returning to Morocco, so book well in advance.

Practical Ferry Tips

  • Check in early: usually at least 2 hours before departure, more with a vehicle.
  • Book a cabin for the night if you want to sleep well.
  • Bring snacks and water; on-board food can be expensive.
  • Passport control: Moroccan police formalities are often done on board. Look for the police counter early in the trip.
  • Schedules change: always confirm the departure time a few days before.

A crossing of more than a day may sound long, but it can be a pleasant experience if you are prepared. The ships on the Barcelona – Tanger Med route are large ferries with several decks.

  • Seats or cabins: you can travel in a reclining seat, but a cabin with a bed and private bathroom is much more comfortable for a night at sea.
  • Food: restaurants and self-service areas offer meals, snacks and drinks. Many families bring their own food.
  • Wi-Fi: internet on board is often limited or paid, and mobile signal disappears at sea. Download films, books and offline maps before boarding.
  • Atmosphere: in summer, ships are lively and full of Moroccan families going home, with a festive mood.
  • Deck: enjoy the views of the Balearic Islands, the Spanish coast and finally the Strait of Gibraltar.
  • Seasickness: the Mediterranean is usually calm, but bring medicine if you are sensitive.

This is the best option for train lovers and travelers who want to see Andalusia on the way. You cross Spain by high-speed train, then take a short ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Step 1: Barcelona to the South of Spain

  • Barcelona – Málaga: direct high-speed trains take about 5.5 to 6 hours. From Málaga, buses go to Algeciras and Tarifa.
  • Barcelona – Madrid – Algeciras: high-speed train to Madrid (about 2.5 to 3 hours), then a train to Algeciras (about 5.5 to 6 hours).
  • Barcelona – Seville: another option, with trains or buses continuing to Algeciras.

Step 2: The Ferry to Tangier

Ferry routeArrivalCrossing time
Tarifa – Tangier VilleTangier city centerAbout 1 hour
Algeciras – Tanger MedTanger Med port, 40 km from the cityAbout 1.5 hours

For foot passengers, Tarifa – Tangier Ville is the best choice: you arrive right in the city, a short walk from the medina. Read our guide travel from Spain to Morocco for more details on the ferries.

How Long Does It Take?

The train and ferry route can be done in one long day if all connections work, but it is much nicer with a night in Granada, Seville, Málaga or Tarifa. It is an excellent way to enjoy two countries in one trip. Spanish high-speed trains are comfortable and fast, and arriving in Tarifa, the windy southern tip of Europe, with the mountains of Morocco visible across the water, is a special moment. Book your trains in advance for the best prices, and plan the last connection to the ferry with some extra time.

Driving from Barcelona to Algeciras is about 1,100 kilometers, roughly 11 hours along the Mediterranean coast or through Madrid. From Algeciras, a car ferry takes you to Tanger Med in about 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can put your car on the direct ferry from Barcelona and avoid the long drive.

  • Car papers: bring registration documents and insurance valid in Morocco (green card), or buy insurance at the port.
  • Rental cars: Spanish rental companies rarely allow cars to go to Morocco; rent a car in Tangier instead.
  • Temporary import: your car is registered at customs and must leave Morocco with you.
  • Summer: expect very long queues at ports in July and August.

This is one of the most important details when traveling to Tangier by sea. Tangier has two very different ports:

PortLocationWho uses itNext steps
Tangier VilleIn the city center, next to the medinaFast ferries from Tarifa, foot passengersWalk to the medina or take a short taxi to the train station
Tanger MedAbout 40 km east of the cityFerries from Algeciras and Barcelona, cars and trucksShuttle bus or taxi to Tangier, about 45 to 60 minutes

If you arrive at Tanger Med without a car, plan extra time and money to reach the city. If you plan to continue directly south, ask about transport options from the port. A private driver can also meet you at Tanger Med and take you straight to Chefchaouen, Tetouan or the train station, which saves time after a long crossing.

PeriodBarcelonaTangierDifference
WinterUTC+1UTC+1Same time
SummerUTC+2UTC+1Tangier is 1 hour behind
RamadanUTC+1 or UTC+2UTC+0Tangier is 1 or 2 hours behind

Always check whether your flight or ferry times are in Spanish or Moroccan time. In summer, a one-hour ferry from Tarifa can arrive in Tangier at the same clock time it left Spain, which surprises many first-time travelers and can cause missed connections.

  • A valid passport. An EU or Spanish ID card is not enough to enter Morocco.
  • Visa: citizens of the EU and many other countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Check the rules for your nationality.
  • Residents of Spain with a non-EU passport should check Moroccan visa rules and their re-entry conditions for Spain.
  • Vehicle documents if you bring a car or motorbike.

Tangier is often seen only as a gateway, but it deserves at least one or two days. The city mixes Moroccan traditions, Spanish influences and an international past, and its views over the Strait of Gibraltar are memorable. Here are the highlights:

  • The Kasbah: the old fortress at the top of the medina, with views over the strait and a museum in the former sultan’s palace.
  • The medina: white alleys, small squares like the Petit Socco and the Grand Socco, and traditional shops.
  • Café Hafa: a legendary terrace café opened in the early 20th century, overlooking the sea toward Spain.
  • The American Legation: the first property the United States owned abroad, now a museum.
  • Cap Spartel: the lighthouse where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
  • Caves of Hercules: sea caves linked to the legend of Hercules.
  • The Corniche and beaches: a long seafront promenade good for evening walks.

Tangier has its own food traditions, influenced by Morocco, Spain and the sea. Do not miss:

  • Fresh seafood and grilled fish near the port.
  • Bissara, a warm fava bean soup with olive oil and cumin, good for breakfast.
  • Kalinté (karantika), a chickpea flan sold hot in the street, a Tangier specialty with Spanish roots.
  • Msemen and harcha, Moroccan breads for breakfast with honey or cheese.
  • Mint tea at Café Hafa, served in glasses on terraces facing the sea and the Spanish coast.

Tangier is a great base for a few days before you continue south. Easy day trips include:

  • Asilah: a small whitewashed town on the Atlantic, about 45 minutes away, famous for its murals, ramparts and fresh fish.
  • Tetouan: a UNESCO-listed medina with strong Andalusian heritage, about one hour away.
  • Chefchaouen: the Blue City in the Rif Mountains, about 2.5 to 3 hours away; better with a night there.
  • Cap Spartel and Achakar beach: lighthouse views and wild Atlantic beaches just outside the city.
  • Ceuta: a Spanish city on the African coast, about one hour away; check border rules and queues before going.

If you have more time, Tangier is a good starting point for a longer journey to Fes, the Middle Atlas and the Sahara. Our Tangier desert tours include pick-up at the airport, the port or your hotel.

Yes. Many travelers coming from Barcelona think of Tangier as a simple transit city, but it has transformed in recent years. The medina has been restored, the new marina and seafront are lively in the evening, and the Kasbah offers some of the best views in northern Morocco. Its mix of Moroccan, Spanish and international influences makes it feel different from any other Moroccan city. Give it at least one full day, and you will understand why so many artists and writers fell in love with it.

SeasonBarcelonaTangier
WinterMild, some rainMild and rainier, sometimes windy
SpringPleasantGreen and pleasant
SummerHot and humidWarm, sometimes windy with the levante
AutumnMildWarm and pleasant

The climates are quite similar, as both are Mediterranean port cities. Tangier can be windy, which sometimes delays ferries. Read our guide to the weather in Tangier.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons: the weather is pleasant, flights are cheaper and ferries are calmer. Summer is the busiest period by far, as many Moroccans living in Catalonia and Europe travel home; book flights and ferries months in advance. Winter is quiet and cheap, but the sea can be rough and some fast ferries may be cancelled because of wind. If you plan to continue to the Sahara, autumn and spring offer the best conditions.

  • Euros are easy to exchange in Tangier at official exchange offices or banks.
  • ATMs are common in the city; choose to be charged in dirhams. Read our guide to the Moroccan dirham.
  • EU roaming usually does not include Morocco, so buy a local SIM or eSIM.
  • Save numbers in international format. See our guide to the phone code of Morocco.

The direct flight is the easiest option for families with young children and older travelers: it is short and simple. The long ferry can also be fun for families if you book a cabin, as children enjoy exploring the ship. In Tangier, the medina has steep streets and stairs, so choose a hotel with easy access by car if walking is difficult. See our Morocco tours for seniors.

OptionApproximate cost for two, one wayNotes
Low-cost flight€60 to €300Cheapest when booked early; extra fees for bags
Direct ferry, seats€180 to €300Add more for a cabin and meals
Direct ferry with car and cabin€400 to €800Depends on season and vehicle size
Train + Tarifa ferry€250 to €450Plus a hotel night on the way

These are rough estimates that change a lot with the season, the day of the week and how early you book. For a short city break, the flight wins on price and time. For a long road trip with a vehicle, the direct ferry saves you more than 1,000 kilometers of driving through Spain and the cost of fuel, tolls and hotels on the way. For travelers who want to enjoy Spain too, the train route turns transport into part of the holiday, with stops in cities like Granada, Seville or Málaga before crossing to Africa.

Whatever you choose, remember to add the cost of transport between the port or airport and the city center in Tangier, especially if you arrive at Tanger Med, about 40 kilometers away.

Tangier is generally safe for visitors, and it has changed a lot in recent years, with a modern marina, renovated medina and seafront. As in any port city, stay alert when you arrive. Ignore people who offer to carry your bags or show you a hotel for money, use official taxis and agree on the price before you go, and keep your passport and wallet in a secure place.
