Travel Itinerary Planner: How to Plan the Perfect Morocco Trip, Step by Step

Planning a trip to Morocco is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Should you start in Marrakech or Fes? How many days do you need for the Sahara? Can you see Chefchaouen and the desert in one week? How long are the drives? Most online planners give you a blank template and leave you alone with these questions.

This travel itinerary planner is different. It was written by our local team, who plan Morocco trips every day, and it works like a step-by-step tool: you make seven simple decisions, and at the end you have a clear, realistic itinerary. Along the way, we give you real driving times, a planning matrix that matches your number of days and starting city to a ready-made route, a printable template, budget tables, and links to every one of our tested itineraries, from 2 days to 14 days.

StepYour decisionOur quick advice

4. SeasonWhen are you going?Spring and autumn are best; adapt the route in summer and winter
5. Daily rhythmHow much driving per day?Keep most days under 6 to 7 hours on the road

Morocco looks small on a map, but it is bigger and more varied than most visitors expect. In one trip, you can cross snowy mountains, palm oases, rocky gorges, golden dunes, ancient medinas and Atlantic beaches. Distances between highlights are long, roads through the Atlas are winding, and the desert is far from the main airports. A good plan helps you avoid the three most common mistakes: trying to see too much, underestimating driving times, and choosing the wrong starting point. It also helps you balance busy city days with calm moments in nature, which is the secret of a Morocco trip you will remember with a smile rather than with tired legs.

A clear itinerary also helps you choose the right tour. Our Morocco itineraries page lists all our routes, but this planner will help you understand which one fits you best, or how to build your own.

Before you build your route, it helps to understand Morocco’s main regions and how much time each one needs:

RegionHighlightsMinimum time
Marrakech and the High AtlasMedina, gardens, palaces, Berber villages, Imlil2 to 3 days
The South: Ouarzazate, Dades and TodraKasbahs, Ait Ben Haddou, gorges, palm oases1 to 2 days on the way to the desert
The Sahara: Merzouga or ZagoraDunes, camel rides, desert camps, nomads1 to 2 nights
Fes and the Middle AtlasOldest medina, Meknes, Volubilis, cedar forests2 to 3 days
The North: Chefchaouen, Tetouan, TangierBlue City, Rif Mountains, Mediterranean coast2 to 3 days
The Atlantic Coast: Casablanca, Rabat, EssaouiraHassan II Mosque, capital city, beaches and seafood1 to 3 days

Add up the minimum times of the regions you want to visit, and you will quickly see whether your plan fits your number of days. Learn more in our guide to Morocco’s physical features.

Many travelers combine Morocco with Spain or Portugal in the same trip. The easiest way is to fly from Madrid, Barcelona, Seville or Lisbon, or to take the short ferry from Tarifa to Tangier. If you arrive from Spain by sea, start your itinerary in the north and travel south to the Sahara and Marrakech, then fly home from Marrakech. Read our guides travel from Madrid to Marrakech, travel from Barcelona to Tangier and travel to Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

The number of days you have is the most important decision, because it decides how far you can go. Here is what is realistic:

DaysWhat you can seeBest itinerary to start from
2 daysMarrakech to the Zagora desert, or Fes to Merzouga2 days from Marrakech / 2 days from Fes
3 daysThe Sahara at Merzouga, with kasbahs and gorges3 days Marrakech to Merzouga / 3 days Marrakech to Fes
4 daysThe desert at a slower pace, or a desert crossing between two citiesMorocco itinerary 4 days
5 daysDesert plus extra time in the gorges or valleysMorocco itinerary 5 days
6 daysDesert and one imperial cityMorocco itinerary 6 days
7 daysThe classic loop: Marrakech, Sahara, FesMorocco itinerary 7 days
8 to 9 daysAdd Chefchaouen or the coast8 days / 9 days
10 to 11 daysImperial cities, desert, Blue City and more10 days / 11 days
12 to 14 daysThe complete grand tour, including the Atlantic coast12 days / 14 days

Our rule of thumb: for a first trip, plan at least 7 days if you want to see Marrakech, the Sahara and Fes without rushing. If you only have 3 or 4 days, focus on the desert or on one city and its surroundings. Remember to count your arrival and departure days: if you land in the evening, that day is mostly for resting, so a “7-day trip” may really give you six full days of sightseeing.

Your arrival airport shapes the whole route. The best itineraries are often one-way trips that start in one city and end in another, so you never drive the same road twice.

Starting cityWhy start hereRecommended tours
MarrakechThe most flights, the easiest start, close to the High Atlas and the road to the SaharaMarrakech desert tours
FesThe best start for north-to-south routes; close to the Merzouga dunesFes desert tours
TangierIdeal if you arrive from Spain or Europe; close to ChefchaouenTangier desert tours
OuarzazateThe gateway to the south, kasbahs and film studiosOuarzazate desert tours
CasablancaMain international hub, with direct long-haul flightsStart with the Hassan II Mosque, then go to Marrakech or Fes

Smart trick: book an open-jaw flight, for example arriving in Marrakech and leaving from Fes, or arriving in Tangier and leaving from Marrakech. It is often similar in price to a return ticket and saves a full day of driving, which you can spend in a medina, a hammam or an extra night in the dunes instead.

The same route can feel very different depending on who you travel with. Adapt the pace, the activities and the type of accommodation to your group, so everyone enjoys the trip:

Traveler typeWhat they needBest option
Families with childrenShorter drives, pools, camel rides, flexible scheduleMorocco family tours
Couples and honeymoonersRomantic riads, luxury desert camps, private experiencesMorocco honeymoon tours
SeniorsSlower pace, comfortable hotels, fewer stairs and hotel changesMorocco tours for seniors
Students and groupsBudget options, group activities, educationMorocco student tours
Heritage travelersSynagogues, mellahs and cultural historyHeritage Morocco Jewish tours
AdventurersHiking, long desert stays, remote areasMorocco desert tours with extra nights
SeasonWeatherHow to adapt your itinerary
Spring (March to May)Mild and greenPerfect for any route
Summer (June to August)Very hot inland, mild on the coastVisit the desert at sunrise and sunset, add the coast or the mountains
Autumn (September to November)Warm and pleasantExcellent for the desert and long tours
Winter (December to February)Sunny days, cold nights, snow in the AtlasBring warm clothes; mountain passes can close after snow

Also check the dates of Ramadan and Eid, which can affect opening hours and transport. Read our guides to the best time to visit Morocco and What is Eid?.

This is where most self-made itineraries fail. Driving times in Morocco are longer than maps suggest, because of mountain roads, villages and photo stops. Here are realistic times with a private driver, including short breaks:

RouteApproximate driving time
Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – OuarzazateAbout 4 to 5 hours
Ouarzazate – Dades ValleyAbout 2 to 3 hours
Dades Valley – MerzougaAbout 5 to 6 hours
Marrakech – Merzouga (direct)About 9 to 10 hours
Merzouga – FesAbout 7 to 8 hours
Fes – ChefchaouenAbout 3.5 to 4 hours
Chefchaouen – TangierAbout 2.5 to 3 hours
Marrakech – EssaouiraAbout 2.5 to 3 hours
Casablanca – MarrakechAbout 3 hours
Fes – Marrakech (direct road)About 7 to 8 hours

The Golden Rules of Our Itinerary Planner

  • Keep most days under 6 to 7 hours of driving.
  • Break long drives with a night in the Dades Valley or the Todra Gorge.
  • Stay at least two nights in Marrakech and Fes; one day is not enough for a medina.
  • Spend at least one night in the Sahara; two nights if you can.
  • Do not backtrack: plan a one-way route whenever possible.
  • Leave a free half-day every few days to rest or explore.
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)Zagora
DunesHigh golden dunes, the classic Sahara imageSmaller dunes and rocky desert
From MarrakechAt least 3 days recommendedPossible in 2 days
From FesAbout 7 to 8 hours, ideal startFar, not recommended
Best forFirst-time visitors who want the real Sahara experienceShort trips with little time

This is one of the most important choices in any Morocco itinerary. If you have at least three days, we always recommend Merzouga: the dunes of Erg Chebbi are much higher and more spectacular, and the road there passes through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. Zagora is a good option only if you have two days from Marrakech and still want a desert night.

Comfort levelAccommodationApproximate daily budget per person
BudgetSimple riads, standard desert campsAbout €40 to €70
Mid-rangeCharming riads, comfortable camps with private bathroomsAbout €80 to €150
LuxuryBoutique riads, luxury desert camps, private experiences€200 and more

These figures cover accommodation and food and do not include international flights. A private tour with a driver adds transport and local expertise; the cost per person drops when you travel in a group. For money tips, read our guide to the Moroccan dirham.

  • Flights: consider open-jaw tickets.
  • Accommodation: book riads in Marrakech and Fes early in high season.
  • Tour or driver: confirm your route, pick-up time and what is included.
  • Documents: check passport validity and visa rules for your nationality.
  • Insurance: take travel insurance with medical cover.
  • Money: plan to withdraw dirhams on arrival.
  • SIM card: buy a local SIM or eSIM. See our guide to the phone code of Morocco.
  • Packing: layers for desert nights, modest clothes, comfortable shoes.

Let us show you how the seven steps work with a real case. Sarah and James, a couple in their forties, have 8 days in Morocco in April. They land in Marrakech, love photography and food, and want a mid-range trip with one special night in a nice desert camp.

  • Step 1: 8 days → enough for Marrakech, the Sahara and Fes, plus one extra highlight.
  • Step 2: Marrakech arrival → a loop back to Marrakech or a one-way route ending in Fes.
  • Step 3: Couple → charming riads and a comfortable camp with private bathroom.
  • Step 4: April → perfect weather everywhere; no changes needed.
  • Step 5: Break the drive with a night in the Dades Valley; two nights in Marrakech and Fes.
  • Step 6: Mid-range budget.
  • Step 7: Book flights into Marrakech and out of Fes.

Result: two nights in Marrakech, then Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, a night in the Merzouga dunes, Fes for two nights, and a day trip to Chefchaouen. The closest ready-made route is our 8 Days Morocco Tour with Imperial Cities, which we can adapt to their dates in a few minutes.

The best approach is often to combine both: use this planner to decide what you want, then let a local team turn it into a smooth trip. Our drivers and guides grew up in Morocco, many of them in the desert and the Atlas, so they know which roads are slow in winter, which viewpoints are worth a stop, and where to find the best tagine on the way.

  • Photography: Chefchaouen at sunrise, the Merzouga dunes at sunset, Ait Ben Haddou in golden light, the tanneries of Fes from a terrace.
  • Food lovers: Marrakech food stalls, a cooking class in a riad, Berber bread in the Atlas, seafood in Essaouira, medfouna (Berber pizza) near Merzouga.
  • History and architecture: the madrasas of Fes, Volubilis, Meknes, the kasbahs of the Draa and Dades valleys, Rabat.
  • Nature and hiking: Imlil and Toubkal, the Todra and Dades gorges, the cedar forests of Ifrane, Ouzoud waterfalls.
  • Desert lovers: two nights in Merzouga, Gara Medouar, nomad families and the Gnaoua village of Khamlia. Read our guide to Gara Medouar.
  • Is the tour private or shared with other travelers?
  • What type of vehicle is used, and is it air-conditioned?
  • Which hotels and which desert camp are included?
  • Are meals included, and which ones?
  • Is the camel ride included, and can we choose a 4×4 instead?
  • How long are the drives each day?
  • Can we change the route or add a day?
  • What happens if a mountain road is closed because of snow?

A good tour company will answer clearly, in writing, and adapt the plan to you. These questions will help you compare offers, understand exactly what you pay for, and avoid surprises once you are on the road.

How many days do I need in Morocco?

For a first trip, 7 to 10 days is ideal to see Marrakech, the Sahara and Fes. With 12 to 14 days you can add Chefchaouen and the coast.

What is the best route for a first Morocco trip?

Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley – Merzouga – Fes, then Chefchaouen if you have time.

Can I visit the Sahara in 2 days?

Yes, but you will reach the Zagora desert from Marrakech. For the big dunes of Merzouga, plan at least 3 days.

Is it better to start in Marrakech or Fes?

Both work. Marrakech has more flights; Fes is closer to the Merzouga dunes and ideal for north-to-south routes.

Should I rent a car or book a private driver?

A private driver is more relaxing on mountain roads and in the desert, and gives you local knowledge.

Can you customize an itinerary?

Yes. All our itineraries can be adapted to your dates, interests and budget.

What is the best free travel itinerary planner for Morocco?

Use the seven steps, matrix and template in this guide, then ask a local expert to check driving times and camps.

How far in advance should I plan a Morocco itinerary?

Two to four months ahead is ideal, and earlier for spring, autumn and holidays.

A good travel itinerary planner is not about filling every hour, but about making smart choices: the right number of days, the right starting point, a realistic daily rhythm and enough time to enjoy each place. Follow the seven steps in this guide, use the matrix and the template, and you will have a Morocco itinerary that is relaxed, efficient and memorable.
