How to Get to Merzouga by Plane: Airports, Flights and Transfers

Every week we pick up travelers who reach Merzouga tired after a nine-hour drive from Marrakech and ask the same thing: “Could I have flown?” The answer is yes, partly. There is no airport in the village, but there is one about two hours away, and a few others that can cut a long road trip in half.

Our team lives in Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and we organize airport pickups and desert tours almost every day of the year. Below we explain how to get to Merzouga by plane, step by step: which airports work best, which airlines fly there, how long the transfer takes, and how to combine flights with a desert tour so you spend more time in the dunes and less time in a car.

AirportDistance to MerzougaDrive timeMain flights

Flight routes change by season, so always check the airline websites before you plan. Distances and times above are by road, with short stops.

Quick answer: No, there is no Merzouga airport. The village is too small and sits right next to the dunes. The nearest airport to Merzouga is Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif Airport (ERH), about 130 km north, roughly a two-hour drive through the Ziz Valley, Erfoud and Rissani.

Many websites and booking engines show “Merzouga airport” in their search box, but the flights they offer always land somewhere else, usually Errachidia, Ouarzazate, Fes or Marrakech. Some travelers only discover this after booking, so double-check the arrival airport code on your ticket. If you search for flights to Merzouga, type “Errachidia” or “ERH” instead.

Merzouga is a small village built along the eastern edge of Erg Chebbi, close to the Algerian border. Most of the land around it is sand dunes, rocky desert and small oases, and the main economy is tourism, agriculture and traditional nomad life. An airport would need flat land, infrastructure and enough flights to make it worthwhile, and Errachidia, the regional capital, already has a large runway that can handle modern jets.

For the people who live here, the two-hour distance is part of what keeps Merzouga quiet. There is no noise of planes, the night sky stays dark, and the stars are bright enough to see the Milky Way most nights of the year. Many of our guests say that this silence is the first thing they notice when they step out of the car at the edge of the dunes.

Quick answer: Errachidia airport (Moulay Ali Cherif, code ERH) is the closest and fastest option. Royal Air Maroc flies there from Casablanca, usually almost every day, and sometimes from Rabat. Ryanair has run flights from Marrakech a few times a week. From the airport, Merzouga is about two hours by car.

Errachidia airport is small and easy. It has one terminal, a single long runway shared with the Moroccan Air Force, and very few flights per day, so there are no long queues. You usually walk out of the arrivals hall a few minutes after landing. The airport sits at about 1,045 meters above sea level, on a high plateau, so evenings can be fresh even in spring and autumn.

These are the main flights to Merzouga’s nearest airport. Schedules change often, especially for low-cost routes, so check before you book. For long-haul travelers, the most reliable option is to land in Casablanca and connect to Errachidia with Royal Air Maroc. Read our guide to Casablanca international airport.

From Errachidia Airport to Merzouga

  • Private transfer: the easiest choice. Your driver waits at arrivals with your name and takes you straight to your hotel or to the camel meeting point.
  • Grand taxi: possible, but you may need to change in Erfoud or Rissani.
  • Bus: a few buses run from Errachidia town to Merzouga, but not from the airport itself.
  • Rental car: a few agencies operate in Errachidia; book in advance.

The road south is one of the reasons we like this airport so much. You follow the Ziz Valley, a long green line of palm trees below rocky cliffs, pass the blue spring of Meski, then drive through Erfoud and Rissani before the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

Quick answer: Ouarzazate airport (OZZ) is about 360 km from Merzouga, or 5.5 to 6 hours by road. Royal Air Maroc flies from Casablanca, and low-cost airlines run seasonal flights from France and Spain. It is a good choice if you want to see the Dades and Todra gorges on the way.

Ouarzazate is the town of kasbahs and film studios. Flying here makes sense if you want to combine the desert with the rest of the south and see more than sand on your way: Ait Ben Haddou, the Rose Valley, the Dades Gorges and the Todgha Gorge. The drive to Merzouga can be done in one long day, but most travelers split it with a night in the Dades Valley. Read our guide to Ouarzazate airport and the Todgha Gorge.

Quick answer: Zagora airport (OZG) is a small airport in the Draa Valley, about 270 km from Merzouga, around 5 hours by road. Flights are limited, usually from Casablanca with a stop in Ouarzazate. It is useful only if you also want to visit Zagora and the Draa Valley.

The road from Zagora to Merzouga crosses remote desert landscapes through Nkob and Alnif. It is a quiet, scenic drive with very little traffic, and you pass villages that few tourists ever see. Fuel stations are far apart on this road, so drivers fill up in Zagora or Tazzarine before continuing.

Quick answer: Fes Saiss airport (FEZ) is about 460 km from Merzouga, or 7 to 8 hours by road. It has many direct flights from European cities, which makes it a popular arrival point. The drive passes Ifrane, the cedar forest, Midelt and the Ziz Gorges.

If you plan to visit Fes and the north as well as the Sahara, flying into Fes is often the best choice. The day-long drive south is one of the most varied in Morocco: cedar forests with Barbary macaques near Ifrane, the high plateau of Midelt with snowy peaks in winter, and the red canyon of the Ziz Gorges before the palm groves begin. Read our guide to Ifrane Morocco. Our 2 Days Desert Tour from Fes and 3 Days Tour from Fes to Merzouga start right from the city or the airport.

Quick answer: Marrakech Menara airport (RAK) has the most international flights in Morocco, but it is the farthest from Merzouga: about 560 km, or 9 to 10 hours of driving. Most travelers break the journey with a night in the Dades Valley, or fly on to Errachidia.

If you land in Marrakech and want to save a full day, look for a connecting flight to Errachidia airport. Otherwise, the road trip over the High Atlas, through the Tizi n’Tichka pass and the valleys of the south, is one of the most scenic drives in Morocco, best enjoyed over two days rather than one. Read our guide Marrakech to Merzouga.

Quick answer: There are no direct international flights to Merzouga. From Europe, fly to Fes, Marrakech, Ouarzazate or sometimes Errachidia on a seasonal route. From North America, the Middle East or Asia, fly to Casablanca and connect to Errachidia with Royal Air Maroc.

When you compare flights to Merzouga, look at the total travel time, not just the flight. A cheap ticket to Marrakech can mean a long drive, while a slightly more expensive connection to Errachidia gets you to the dunes the same day. Our guides for travelers from the Canada and Singapore explain long-haul connections in more detail.

1. Fly In, Fly Out

Fly Casablanca to Errachidia, spend two nights in Merzouga, and fly back. This is the fastest way to see the Sahara and works well for business travelers, people combining Morocco with another country, or anyone on a short break who still wants a real night in the dunes.

2. Drive In, Fly Out

Start in Marrakech, drive over the High Atlas with stops in Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley, sleep in the desert, then fly back from Errachidia. You enjoy the scenery once and skip the long return drive.

3. Open-Jaw Through the Desert

Fly into Marrakech, cross the desert by road, and fly home from Fes. You never drive the same road twice, and you see the High Atlas, the Sahara and the Middle Atlas in one trip. Our 3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes follows this route.

The two-hour drive from the nearest airport to Merzouga is part of the trip. Just south of Errachidia, the road enters the Ziz Valley, where a thick band of date palms follows the river at the bottom of a canyon. Our drivers often stop at a viewpoint above the palm grove, a favorite photo spot.

  • Meski Blue Spring: a natural spring and pool surrounded by palms, a short stop near Errachidia.
  • Ziz Valley viewpoint: one of the largest palm groves in Morocco.
  • Erfoud: known for its fossils and dates; you can visit a fossil workshop.
  • Rissani: the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, with a busy traditional market.
  • Erg Chebbi: the dunes rise suddenly on the horizon, orange in the afternoon light.

If you land in the morning, you can stop at all of these and still reach Merzouga in time for a camel ride at sunset. Read our guide to the sunset in Merzouga. In summer, when afternoons are very hot, it is better to rest at your hotel and start the camel ride around an hour before sunset.

  • Facilities are basic. There are few shops; bring water and a snack.
  • Cash: withdraw dirhams before you fly or in Errachidia town. Read our guide to the Moroccan dirham.
  • SIM card: buy one in Casablanca or Marrakech airport before your domestic flight.
  • Luggage: pack a small overnight bag for the desert camp; big suitcases stay in the car.
  • Late arrivals: some flights land in the evening. Book a hotel in Errachidia or a transfer that drives you directly to Merzouga.

Domestic flights with Royal Air Maroc from Casablanca to Errachidia often cost more than a low-cost international ticket, especially when booked late. Low-cost routes from Marrakech can be cheaper when they run. A private transfer from Errachidia airport to Merzouga depends on the vehicle and group size. For two or more travelers, a desert tour with transfers included is often better value than booking each part separately. Prices change by season, so check current fares before you decide.

  • Camel trekking into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
  • A night in a luxury or comfort desert camp with dinner and Gnaoua music
  • Sunrise from the top of a dune
  • A 4×4 Sahara excursion to nomad families and the black desert
  • Sandboarding on the dunes
  • A visit to the Gnaoua village of Khamlia

Quick answer: Flying is faster, driving is cheaper and more scenic. From Casablanca, a flight to Errachidia plus a two-hour transfer takes about half a day, compared with a full day or more by road. From Marrakech, driving over the High Atlas is beautiful but takes 9 to 10 hours.

Many of our travelers mix both: they drive one way to enjoy the landscapes and fly the other way to save time. It is often the best balance.

  • Casablanca is the hub. Most domestic flights with Royal Air Maroc connect through Casablanca Mohammed V airport.
  • Leave enough connection time. If you arrive on an international flight, plan at least two to three hours before your domestic flight, more if your tickets are separate.
  • Check baggage rules. Low-cost airlines charge for checked bags; domestic Royal Air Maroc fares may include a bag depending on the ticket.
  • Small planes. Some regional routes use turboprop aircraft with limited cabin space; pack light.
  • Arrive early. Moroccan airports have security checks at the entrance and again before boarding.
  • Weather delays: rare, but sandstorms or strong wind can occasionally affect flights in the south.

Read our guide to Casablanca airport for terminal tips.

Errachidia is the capital of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, a calm modern town with wide streets, cafés, a weekly market and a few comfortable hotels. It is not a tourist city, but it makes a practical overnight stop if your flight lands late. Nearby, the Meski Blue Spring and the Ziz Valley viewpoints are worth an hour. The town is also a good place to stock up on cash, water and snacks before heading to the desert.

  • Check your return flight time before booking a second night in the camp; early flights from Errachidia mean leaving Merzouga before dawn.
  • Shake out the sand from your bags and shoes before packing.
  • Keep souvenirs like fossils and pottery in your checked luggage.
  • If your international flight leaves from Casablanca, allow a buffer of several hours after your domestic flight lands.
  • Want to keep exploring? Drive from Merzouga to Fes or Marrakech instead of flying back.

Flying to Errachidia airport is a great option for families with young children and older travelers, as it avoids long days in the car. Combine it with a comfortable desert camp with private bathrooms and a 4×4 instead of a long camel ride. See our Morocco family tours and Morocco tours for seniors.

After years of organizing trips from Merzouga, this is the plan we suggest most to travelers with five days or more. Fly from Casablanca to Errachidia airport and start your trip in the desert, rested, with the best part first. Spend one or two nights in the dunes. Then leave by road toward Marrakech, through the Todgha Gorge, the Dades Valley, the Rose Valley and Ait Ben Haddou, crossing the High Atlas on the last day.

This way you skip the long drive at the start, when you are tired from your flight, and you enjoy the scenery slowly at the end, with stops wherever you like. It also works in the other direction, flying back from Errachidia after a road trip from Marrakech, as in our 3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.

  • Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
  • Is the price per car or per person?
  • Does the transfer go to my hotel, or to the camel meeting point?
  • Can we stop at the Ziz Valley viewpoint and the Meski spring on the way?
  • Is the vehicle air-conditioned, with space for our luggage?
  • Can the same driver take us on to Fes or Marrakech afterwards?

Clear answers to these questions avoid stress on arrival, especially after a long journey when the last thing you want is to negotiate with taxi drivers outside a small airport in the desert. When you book with our team, your driver tracks your flight and waits at arrivals with a sign.
